Henrico County’s newest grocery store is taking shape.

Construction on the Aldi Food Market store on North Parham Road is well underway on the site of a former local steakhouse. It’s one of four locations the German-based discount grocery chain plans to open in the Richmond area.

The exterior development of the 16,000-square-foot building at 1776 N. Parham Road appears all but complete, but an exact opening date was not clear late last week. Messages left for Aldi representatives were not returned Friday afternoon.

Aldi purchased the 1.4-acre lot, previously home to Topeka’s Steakhouse & Saloon, for $1.85 million last June. The site is on the northwest corner of Parham Road and Starling Drive, next to a McDonald’s and near the Tuckahoe Library and Regency Square mall.

In addition to the Parham location, stores are planned in Mechanicsville in the Hanover Village shopping center; in the Staples Mill Square shopping center in Henrico; and in Colonial Heights near Southpark Mall.

The local stores will add to 650 locations the company plans to open across the country, with a goal of bringing its total number of U.S. stores to nearly 2,000 by the end of 2018.
