“The Thinker” has arrived in Richmond.
“Rodin: Evolution of a Genius,” the newest high-profile exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, opens Nov. 21.
The exhibit brings to Richmond more than 200 objects shaped by 19th century master sculptor Auguste Rodin, including examples of the Frenchman’s best-known work such as “The Thinker” and “The Kiss.”
Appreciated both by scholars and amateurs, Rodin was an easy choice for the VMFA, Director Alex Nyerges said.
“All you have to do is say, ‘The Thinker’ and ‘The Kiss.’ Everyone knows those sculptures,” Nyerges said.
Following other successful, big-name exhibits in recent years, Rodin is expected to be successful run for the museum. Nyerges said he is anticipating more than 5,000 new members and more than $1 million in gift shop sales over the course of the exhibit, which goes through March 13.
“This exhibition will be profitable from every perspective,” Nyerges said. “From a business standpoint, this will bring in new customers and bring back repeat customers.”
The exhibition includes objects from the Musee Rodin in Paris that have never been seen before in the U.S. It opened at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and after the VMFA will go to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. The exhibition was co-curated by the Musee Rodin and the Montreal museum.
It costs $15 to see the Rodin exhibit, $12 for seniors, $10 for students, and it is free for members.
Nyerges said getting Rodin to come to Richmond was a product of the VMFA’s relationship with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The two organizations have worked together five times in the past five years, lending to and borrowing from each other on exhibitions such as “Tiffany: Color and Light” and “Faberge Revealed.”
“It’s who you know,” Nyerges said. “And we have two or three more (exhibitions) in the hopper.”
