A longtime local jewelry brand has packed up its Southside shop and is returning to Lakeside.

The Kambourian Jewelers store at 4828 Market Square Lane in Midlothian closed on Dec. 24. The retailer left the 1,500-square-foot space after two years in favor of a move to 5111 Lakeside Ave., where it opened in the 3,000-square-foot space Jan. 5.

The business is owned by sister and brother Melissa and Haig Kambourian III, who bought the company from their father in 2009. He got into the jewelry trade with a West Grace Street storefront in 1966.

Melissa Kambourian said they had a previous shop in Lakeside that did well but had to close because of damage from Hurricane Gaston in 2004. She said closing the Southside shop came about in part because sales did not meet expectations.

“The Southside location never did quite as much business as we hoped,” she said. “Lakeside Avenue was good for us in the past so we decided it was the right move to make.”

Kambourian Jewelers, which specializes in custom design, also has a shop in Carytown, where it has been in business since 2009. It expanded to a bigger space on West Cary Street last year.

“Our (sales) numbers are still up every single month,” Kambourian said. “This Christmas was our best Christmas on record.”

She said the move to Lakeside is projected to cost between $10,000 and $20,000, and the company is doing its own financing. The space was formerly home to a salon. Kambourian has a 10-year lease on the space.

The Lakeside shop will have a showroom, as well as private rooms dedicated to design consultations and diamond buying. A grand opening is planned for February.

Kambourian said going forward the company will also look to expand its online and e-commerce presence.

“One of our goals for 2016 is to start putting our inventory on our website,” she said.
