With a new brand in the bag, a local coffee shop is eyeing the green with its new location in Midlothian.

Café Zata, formerly Taza Coffee n Crème, is opening a kiosk between the ninth and tenth holes at Independence Golf Club. Owners Ben Spencer and partner John Cherenzia are leasing the space out of a converted halfway house on the course and plan in the coming weeks.

Spencer and Cherenzia launched Taza Coffee in 2010 at 5047 Forest Hill Ave. They recently made the call to rebrand the business as Café Zata in part because people were confusing the Taza brand with Tazza Kitchen, a local restaurant chain.

The coffee shop will take over a converted halfway house on the golf course.

“Taza is Spanish for ‘cup,’” Spencer said. “We took ‘taza’ and rearranged it.”

The name isn’t the only change Spencer and Cherenzia have made to their business. In the last six months, they have added draft beer, a walk-in cooler, and expanded the kitchen at their Forest Hill Avenue location. The changes lets Café Zata add breakfast and lunch sandwiches and house-made doughnuts to its menu.

“We’re trying to provide a community atmosphere,” Spencer said. “That’s what we want to develop at Independence.”

The Midlothian kiosk will have a smaller but similar menu to the Forest Hill Avenue location. The walk-up spot will serve golfers and residents from the surrounding Founders Bridge neighborhood alike.

The shop gets its beans from locally based Blanchard’s Coffee Roasting Co., which helped set up the initial meeting with Independence.

The café will be the latest addition to Independence Golf Club’s attractions since brothers Giff and Alan Breed took over the property in 2013. It recently struck a deal with ACAC to offer joint memberships.
