The first bites have been taken out of the Richmond Plaza building to make way for Dominion Resources’ new downtown tower.
Workers for demolition contractor S.B. Cox began chipping away Friday evening at the parking deck of the Richmond Plaza at 111 S. Sixth St. The six-story, 269,000-square-foot building is expected to be brought down to rubble over the next four months.
“What’s coming down tonight, probably took a year to put up with all the bells and whistles,” a worker was overheard saying Friday evening.
The work marks the beginning of end of the building’s life as Hourigan Construction and Chicago-based Clayco prepare to build a 20-story tower on the site for Dominion. Construction is expected to last 26 months.
Richmond Plaza sits across South Sixth Street from Dominion’s current headquarters at 701 E. Cary St. The company has said that it is considering building an additional tower on that site but no plans have been finalized.
Built in 1922, Richmond Plaza is made of concrete, brick, plaster, and aggregate stone. Its parking garage was added in 1974 and is made of steel beams and concrete slabs. Dominion bought the property in 2011 from Washington, D.C.-based Douglas Development for $5.5 million.
