A South Carolina plant closure is set to bring more manufacturing work to DuPont’s Chesterfield County facility.
The Delaware-based company announced Thursday it is closing its Kevlar manufacturing plant near Charleston and moving the work to its larger facility at 5401 Jefferson Davis Highway.
The company will cease operations at its Charleston-area site in June, according to a report by the Charleston Post & Courier. Equipment from the plant will be relocated to DuPont’s facilities in metro Richmond and Northern Ireland.
The closure will affect 113 positions. The company said those employees will be eligible for positions at other facilities, including the Chesterfield plant, which has about 30 openings for manufacturing positions.
DuPont spokesman Dan Turner said the Chesterfield plant will absorb most of the Charleston plant’s production. In a statement, he said moving the operations to the Richmond area will allow the company to invest in growth and innovation specific to its Kevlar business. The Chesterfield plant manufactures the bulletproof material and other fire-resistant and home insulation materials.
DuPont opened the $500 million Kevlar plant near Charleston in 2011, according to the Post & Courier. The company has a large presence in Richmond, employing about 1,800 people at its Chesterfield facility and hundreds more at a facility in Hopewell.
