A pair of longtime local restaurateurs is branching out their empire to include a new venture in the Oregon Hill neighborhood.
Mike Powers and Kelly McCabe last month opened Peddler On Pine Street at 238 S. Pine St.
It marks the fifth food concept for the pair, who for nearly 30 years have peddled a variety of cuisines through their network of food carts. They run Mike’s, Taqueria Mexican Grill and Toasties Panini Grill, all of which make stops around VCU and its medical school campuses downtown. They also own Discovery Café in the Library of Virginia.
Seeing a need for dining options in the Oregon Hill neighborhood, Powers said he and McCabe decided to renovate the 1,500-square-foot space as a to-go and delivery concept. Part of the quarters also will serve as prep space for the group’s catering and cart operations.
Peddler on Pine’s menu includes pizza, hot sandwiches such as lump crab cake and shrimp po boys; salads, grilled paninis, a variety of pasta dishes and desserts.
“We’re looking to increase our catering operations,” Powers said. “This location gives us the space that we need to grow.”
The pair invested about $250,000 to outfit the space, and has hired five workers to staff it. They bought the building in 2016.
While Peddler’s on Pine is mainly a pick-up spot, the restaurant plans to deliver to several neighborhoods within the vicinity, including VCU, the Fan, Monroe Ward, Jackson Ward, Byrd Park and Randolph. Online ordering is also available.
As the temperatures warm up, Powers said the group plans to add some additional items to its menu.
“We may play around with some barbecue options,” he said. “We’re also going to add some seating area for people that are waiting to pick up their food.”
Peddler on Pine Street is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
