A New Jersey-based Indian restaurant chain has hatched a local outpost.
Eggmania opened in early January at 2610 Tuckernuck Drive, behind Tuckernuck Plaza and next to Royal Bazaar Farmers Market. The Henrico location is the company’s first in Virginia and fifth overall.
The restaurant serves a variety of Indian street food dishes, most of which feature eggs.
Eggmania’s menu includes dishes with boiled, shredded or fried eggs, as well as omelets, kebabs and Bombay-style grilled sandwiches with egg, chicken or paneer.
“Even in India, egg-based stuff is a street food,” co-founder Anup Sharma said. “It’s made on a cart and usually for people at night after dinner.”
Eggmania was created by Sharma and four friends he met while attending college in New York who likewise were from Gujarat, India. The quintet missed the egg-heavy street food of home, so Sharma cooked for them. That led to them taking the leap to open the first Eggmania in Jersey City, New Jersey in 2012.
“Whatever I made for my friends, they loved it. So it became a trend that whenever there was a party, I was cooking,” said Sharma, who is the company’s executive chef and has a background in finance. “It was a gamble because I didn’t have a culinary background though I loved cooking.”
The co-founders own the Jersey City spot as well as a second Eggmania also in New Jersey. The company’s other three restaurants are franchises, including the Henrico location as well as a restaurant each in Illinois and Massachusetts.
“It took us some time to establish that customer base but we weren’t in a rush. It was a learning process for me so I wanted to take it nice and easy,” Sharma said.
Sharma declined to name the franchisee behind the Henrico location, which seats about 60 people in its 1,900-square-foot storefront. He also would not share what it costs to buy a franchise. The company started to franchise the concept in 2019.
Eggmania is also planning locations in Georgia and Pennsylvania, according to its website.

This is such a specific and rather unusual (for the area) concept for a restaurant. I love it, hope it works out.
Well, i for one will give his a shot!
I had no idea there was a retail building back there. I figured that road just led to a parking lot or loading docks.
