Fresh off an expansion into Northern Virginia, a national woodworking supplier is expanding its presence in the Old Dominion with a store in Short Pump.
Rockler Woodworking and Hardware plans to open the store this month at 11639 W. Broad St.
The 7,800-square-foot space in the Promenade Shops center was for years occupied by home and garden retailer Plow & Hearth.
Rockler sells lumber and woodworking tools and supplies. The Short Pump store will feature products from SawStop, Jet, Powermatic, Festool and other brands. The company’s stores also offer woodworking classes.
Rockler CEO Steve Singer said the company set its sights on the Richmond area shortly after its first Virginia store opened in Fairfax last summer and had a good reception. He said the Richmond region is a hot spot for Rockler’s online sales and the company believes there’s strong interest locally in woodworking.
“We immediately began looking for another great location (in Virginia) and Richmond came to the top,” Singer said. “There’s a great woodworking community in Richmond. The demographics of the city and the vibrancy of the area are great.”
Singer said in an interview Tuesday that the store was expected to open in the coming days.
He said the company could potentially open more stores in Virginia but had no specific plans to do so.
Rockler is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The company has nearly 50 stores in about 25 states.
It’s unclear when Plow & Hearth, a brand owned by locally based Evergreen Enterprises, shuttered the Short Pump store. Evergreen CEO John Toler was unavailable for comment this week.

Damn, I miss my woodworking days with Mr. Davis at Colonial Heights Middle School. If the owner is reading this, please bring a store to the Colonial Heights area!
Chuck Davis was great!
Rockler makes and distributes some great products; I’m happy to see them come to Richmond.
We had some good times!
I’m sure there wood products will be a much better quality than the big box stores.
I’ve tinkered with wood working projects. Now that I have retired, I’m going to make this part of my hobbies. The other part will be dedicated to my gourds. I’ve set up a shop in my backyard and part of my garage. This will be interesting. I only wish it was here in Huntsville.
I have purchased Rockler products in the past and I plan on purchasing additional products.
