A growing private school’s students no longer have to eat lunch in the chapel.

Grace Christian School has completed construction on a 18,000-square-foot, two-story wing to the church at 8067 Atlee Road where it operates.

The $6 million project brings the building, which is shared with the congregation of Grace Christian Church, to a total of 24,000 square feet with room for a new cafeteria and 11 new classrooms for the school.

The project also includes a new office wing and weight room in addition to the expansion of existing athletic locker rooms.

Grace Christian School had fewer than 40 students when it opened in 2013. It has since grown steadily and now has enrollment of about 300. With the expansion now open, the nondenominational school for sixth to 12th graders has more space for its current student body and is able to continue to grow its headcount.

Before the project, planning for which began prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the school had come to utilize the entire church building, including using the chapel as an ad-hoc lunchroom. Now, some spaces can be rededicated to church use.

“There were microwaves plugged in under stained-glass windows,” Executive Director and Head of School Kathryn Bremner said. “We were everywhere and I’m sure the church is happy to have some quiet.”

Attendees came out for a ribbon-cutting event in September to recognize the completion Grace Christian School’s $6 million addition.

Construction was completed in late August. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the expansion was held this month. The school broke ground on the project, which is its first major capital project, in early 2022.

Norman Company was the general contractor. Huff-Morris Architects designed the new facilities.

In addition to the $6 million to build the expansion, the school collected $700,000 in a fundraising campaign to outfit the new spaces with furniture and equipment and renovate existing spaces of the school. The campaign exceeded its initial goal by $100,000.

Grace Christian School was founded in 2011 and graduated its first class in June 2016.

The school and Grace Christian Church share the property but are distinct nonprofit organizations. The church formerly was called Mechanicsville Church of Christ.
