A year and a half after it opened its first location on the Peninsula, a custom clothing company has expanded with its first Richmond store.

Andre’ Julius, which primarily caters to men, selling custom suits, blazers, tuxedos and shirts, opened a showroom earlier this month at 1309 E. Main St. downtown.

Owner Andre’ McLaughlin said each garment is made to order, with men’s suits starting at $799. His showrooms operate on a by-appointment basis and also offer custom women’s suits.

“You really have the ability to design your suit or shirt or tuxedo or whatever it is,” McLaughlin said. “Clients come in and they pick through about ten thousand fabrics from mills across the world. They pick their fabric and they pick their buttons and linings and all the other elements that go with that garment.”

The new Richmond outpost, where McLaughlin had his first appointment Nov. 11, is the second location for the company. The Williamsburg native opened his first location at 4345 New Town Ave. in James City County in summer 2022.

McLaughlin said he was attracted to Richmond for his company’s expansion because it seemed like a natural, larger market in which to take his next step. He was also attracted by the city’s food scene. He plans to eventually add a third showroom in Washington, D.C.

Andre’ Julius is the result of McLaughlin turning a longtime interest in fashion into a business venture. He said attending church while he was growing up inspired his love of suits.

“The passion for fashion derived from church,” McLaughlin said. “Baptist churches, no matter how old you are, you put on a suit.”

Manufacturers in England and Italy make the clothing that the company sells. McLaughlin handles measurements and minor alterations himself. He said his company has clothed the likes of former pro football player Ryan Clark and gospel singer Jonathan Nelson.

The Andre’ Julius showroom in Richmond is in a 1,600-square-foot space near the corner of Main and 14th streets that was formerly occupied by Annalise Bridal Boutique. The wedding boutique is now located at 4901 Libbie Mill East Blvd. in Libbie Mill.
