The effort to extend Fairground Road in Goochland County continues to move forward after the completion of a roundabout at its intersection with Sandy Hook Road.
The planned route of the less-than-a-mile extension would take Fairground Road (Route 632) from the new roundabout and link up with River Road West between Goochland High School and Goochland Elementary School.
The extension would involve the construction of two travel lanes on about 1,200 feet of new roadway. An eastbound left-turn lane is planned for River Road West.
The project is expected to be put out to bid in spring 2026, with construction to follow in the fall of 2026. Completion is tentatively scheduled for spring 2028, Tom Kendrick, project manager with the Virginia Department of Transportation, said in a recent interview.
The anticipated budget is $7.6 million, a figure that includes construction costs as well as the right-of-way acquisition costs among other expenses, according to Kendrick.
Goochland is providing $5.4 million toward the project, some of which is associated with a matching grant with the state. VDOT has earmarked $2.2 million for the project, according to a VDOT spokeswoman.
The extension has the potential to encourage greater economic development in central Goochland as well as improve the flow of traffic in the area, according to a resolution the Board of Supervisors approved in 2017 in support of the county’s grant application for the project.
That resolution referred to the project as a means to “facilitate economic development by improving access to vacant business-zoned properties (and) provide a through street to improve the road network in the Goochland Courthouse Village.”
The new roadway will be near the county administration offices and the Food Lion-anchored Goochland Square shopping center.
The road extension project follows the completion this summer of the roundabout that will serve as the project’s eastern bookend. The single-lane roundabout at Fairground and Sandy Hook also involved the extension of Fairground by about 400 feet west of Sandy Hook, as well as sidewalks.
The Fairground Road extension project proceeds along with the planned construction of a new I-64 interchange planned at Ashland Road in eastern Goochland. Preliminary engineering work on that $76 million project is expected to last through 2025.
