Competing convenience store chains have plans in the works to further expand their footprints in the Richmond market.
Sheetz has filed plans to establish a new location at the corner of Gaskins Road and Mayland Drive in Henrico County. Meanwhile, Wawa has a new local store in the works for a site northwest of Chester.
The upcoming Sheetz in Henrico is planned for 9927 Mayland Drive. The property was formerly home to an outpost of the O’Charley’s restaurant chain.
Further details about the new Sheetz, such as its anticipated opening date, were unclear. It was also unclear whether Sheetz intends to demolish the restaurant building on the site or repurpose it for the new location.
A Sheetz spokesman declined to comment on the company’s plans for the Henrico location.
The former O’Charley’s is next to a Holiday Inn Express. A preliminary site plan for the Sheetz planned for the site shows that the new project would utilize the property’s existing vehicular entrance on Mayland. Per that plan, the Sheetz site would remain accessible to vehicular traffic from the hotel’s parking lot.
The site plan shows the Sheetz would have gas pumps and a drive-thru. The project proposal was still under review by Henrico staff.
Also in Henrico, Sheetz is planning to open a location across from the Amtrak station on Staples Mill Road. That project, where the Sheetz would anchor a proposed commercial project, would include townhomes.
Sheetz is also working on a new location at 14301 Midlothian Turnpike, across from the Winterfield Crossing shopping center. In the summer, Sheetz opened a location at 12163 Hull Street Road near the Brandermill area in Chesterfield.
As for Wawa, the company recently filed plans for a new convenience store and gas station at 5740 Beulah Road.
The 6,000-square-foot Wawa would be new construction on the undeveloped property at the corner of Iron Bridge and Beulah roads. Drivers would be able to access the Wawa from entrances planned on both roads.

Wawa didn’t respond to requests for comment for this article. The project was still being reviewed by Chesterfield staff.
Wawa is also working on a store that comes as part of a 100-acre development in the works in Varina. The chain has opened a location at 5900 W. Broad St. in Henrico, which was formerly the site of an Arby’s.
Royal Farms, another competing convenience store chain with local expansion plans, opened its first Richmond-area location at 10301 Midlothian Turnpike this summer. The chain also has a Colonial Heights location. Texas-based Buc-ee’s is working on opening its first Virginia location in New Kent.

I’d love to know more about the stalled Wawa at Robious/Hugeunot Trail and Winterfield Road.
