Geretha Nolan v. David LeRoux, O.D.; Family Vision Care of Richmond, P.C.; Joseph Iuorno, M.D.; and Commonwealth Eye Care Associates, LLC d/b/a Commonwealth Eye Care Associates
Plaintiff says in January 2022, LeRoux diagnosed cataracts in both eyes and referred her to Iuorno for surgery. Plaintiff says on April 20, defendant performed the surgery on her right eye, and during the course of the procedure, a significant portion of the cataract detached and then dislocated into her vitreous cavity, but defendant made no attempt to retrieve the pieces or inform her of the complication. Her left eye was performed on April 27, without apparent incident, plaintiff says, and she returned to LeRoux for a follow-up about May 12 and complained of discomfort in her right eye, but LeRoux said it was only dry eye and prescribed drops. Plaintiff says she returned five subsequent times over the next months with increasing complaints, but LeRoux and his office then stopped returning her calls. Plaintiff says she went to Virginia Eye Institute on July 24, 2023, where it was discovered Iuorno had left the pieces in her eye, which had caused uveitis and cystoid macular edema, which required surgical removal of the pieces. Plaintiff says she continues to experience issues with her vision that severely impact her depth perception, glare and haziness, and as the result of defendants’ negligence, she has endured several surgeries and complications. Plaintiff asks judgment of $5 million.
