A chain of Greek eateries is planting its first flag in the Richmond area.
The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill is planning to open a location in the Shoppes at Belvedere Vista in Midlothian, according to a building permit filed with Chesterfield County.
The permit was for renovations on the storefront at 11458 Belvedere Vista Lane, a space formerly occupied by restaurant Toby Chicken. The space is near the Firebirds restaurant in the shopping center, which is close to the intersection of Huguenot and Robious roads.
It’s unclear when Great Greek is anticipated to open, or who the franchisee is behind the location. The company didn’t respond to requests for comment.
Trey Blankinship of Segall Group handled lease negotiations for the landlord in the Great Greek deal.
The Midlothian location is listed as “coming soon” on the company’s website and appears to be the first location of the Great Greek chain to open in the area. There’s already an outpost in Falls Church.
Great Greek offers sandwiches, entrees like chicken souvlaki skewers and a salmon dish, salads and desserts.
The original Great Greek restaurant opened in 2011 in Las Vegas, and the current owners took it over in 2016, per the company’s website. The chain’s website lists more than 80 locations that are either open or in the works.
Great Greek’s franchise fee is $39,500 and requires franchisees to have liquid capital of $225,00, per the company’s website. The company estimates a $650,000 to $800,000 total investment to be a franchisee, and the company takes a 6 percent cut of gross sales in royalties.
In other recent local restaurant moves, breakfast chain Rise is planning to open a location in Carytown, and Latitude Seafood Co. is working on a new location on Hull Street Road.

Has anyone had food at a “Greek” chain that was as good as a local Greek place ever?
