Three years after opening its first local store in Chesterfield, a Hampton Roads-based appliance retailer has added its second location in the region.

East Coast Appliance is open for business at 9101 W. Broad St. in the Tuckernuck Commons shopping center. The 14,000-square-foot store is in the now-renovated former David’s Bridal building.

An LLC tied to East Coast Appliance bought the standalone Broad Street building for $3.7 million in January, per online county land records.

The new Henrico outpost is the company’s first Richmond-area location north of the James River. East Coast Appliance entered the local market with a store that opened in 2021 at 11000 Midlothian Turnpike, near Chesterfield Towne Center.

CEO Matthew Brehl said customer demand for a store in western Henrico and a desire to join a major retail corridor drove the company’s decision to plant its flag at Tuckernuck Commons. He said it is exploring further expansion in the region, with Mechanicsville, Chester and Colonial Heights on its radar.

“Our intention is to really expand our footprint in that market,” Brehl said, adding that the chain is also looking at Charlottesville for another potential store.

East Coast’s new Broad Street building had previously been eyed by North Carolina-based chain Triveni Supermarket for a grocery store that never materialized. The building was left vacant by David’s Bridal, which relocated its local outpost to West Broad Marketplace in 2022.

The property, which is an outparcel of Tuckernuck Commons, was most recently assessed at $2.5 million.

Other tenants in the shopping center include Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and Dollar Tree, among others.

Amid its expansion plans, business has been good at East Coast, according to Brehl, who noted the company’s products tend to be in demand regardless of economic trends.

“When people are feeling great about things, they remodel a kitchen. But when money is tight, they still need appliances. You still need to wash clothes and cook food,” he said.

East Coast owner Rob Nicholson opened the brand’s first store in 1988. All of the Norfolk-based company’s eight stores are in Virginia, with most of them in Hampton Roads, per the company’s website.

Reminds me of HH Gregg that lasted about a minute in Short Pump a few years ago.

Customer service is MUCH better than HH Gregg and their scratch/dent/open box selection reminds me of the old Sears Outlet on Tomlynn.

This is an excellent operator, who prefers owning their locations. This isn’t HHGregg.

Thanks for all the support and kind words. We truly appreciate the opportunity to serve the Richmond community and the response so far has been amazing. Rob Nicholson started the company over 34 years ago after serving in the Navy. We are transitioning into an ESOP held company and the employee ownership is super excited as well. Our buying power coupled with Virginia’s largest available inventory and ability to deliver same day/next day is huge for the customers who put their trust in us- and we don’t take it for granted. The county was great to work with and it… Read more »
