Off-price retailers are expanding their store counts in the Richmond region.
TJ Maxx is planning to open a new location in Glen Allen, while Burlington has lined up new stores in eastern Henrico and North Chesterfield.
TJ Maxx is looking to take over the former Barnes & Noble space at 9850 Brook Road in the Creeks at Virginia Center, according to permits recently filed with Henrico County.
Barnes & Noble exited the 22,000-square-foot space in June with plans to relocate elsewhere. A spokeswoman for the bookstore chain said last week that the company was still looking for a replacement location
A TJ Maxx spokeswoman declined to comment on an opening date for the new store, which will be next to a Ross Dress For Less.
TJ Maxx currently has five stores in the Richmond area, per the company’s website.
The upcoming TJ Maxx comes as parent company TJX Cos. is preparing to open one of its Marshalls off-price stores at Meadowbrook Plaza shopping center in North Chesterfield next week.
That store is being relocated from the nearby Meadowdale Plaza shopping center to the new 22,000-square-foot location on Hopkins Road.
Meanwhile, competitor Burlington is also expanding in Meadowbrook Plaza, with a new 25,000-square-foot store set to open Friday next door to the upcoming Marshalls. Both are near the Gold’s Gym at the center.

That 18,000-square-foot location is next to a PetSmart in the White Oak Village shopping center. Burlington’s space was formerly home to OfficeMax.
The two new Burlington outposts follow the opening of a Burlington at 11609 Midlothian Turnpike earlier this year. The new stores bring Burlington to seven locations in the Richmond region, according to an online store list.
Its White Oak opening comes shortly after most of the shopping center was purchased by a division of Pennsylvania-based investment firm J.C. Bar Properties for $63 million.
