HCA is another step closer to establishing a new freestanding emergency room in Chesterfield.
The health system recently filed for a building permit for a nearly 11,000-square-foot ER that would be built at 9630 Iron Bridge Road.
Construction on the $16 million center is slated to start in mid-2025, HCA spokesman Wes Hester said in an email. The 24-hour facility, which would be an arm of Chippenham Hospital, is anticipated to open in 2026 and would add to HCA’s presence in central Chesterfield.
“This new facility will allow us to deliver services closer to where our patients live and work and provide an additional HCA Virginia access point for the Chesterfield community,” Hester said.
The health system didn’t comment on whether a general contractor had been tapped to handle the project. The permit received by Chesterfield earlier this month didn’t list a contractor. An October site plan for the ER listed Nashville-based Hereford Dooley Architects as part of the project.
The project would rise on a 3-acre, three-parcel assemblage that also includes 9640 and 9650 Iron Bridge Road. Stephen Lindberg, Myers Enterprises Inc. and B and J Myers LLC each own one parcel, per online land records. In a late 2022 filing to the state, HCA stated that it intended to lease the land on which the ER would be built.
HCA isn’t the only health system eyeing the area around Chesterfield’s courthouse and government offices.
VCU Health is planning to relocate a proposed outpatient surgery center away from the nearby Courthouse Landing development and to a new, yet-to-be-announced location in the vicinity. The health system is seeking the state’s approval for a new site for the project.
VCU Health hadn’t received a decision on its request from the Virginia Department of Health as of earlier this week, according to a spokeswoman.
In Virginia, certain medical facilities and equipment require regulatory approval through the VDH’s Certificate of Public Need program. HCA’s application tied to the ER planned for Iron Bridge Road received the state’s approval last year.
The upcoming Iron Bridge ER would be HCA’s fourth freestanding emergency room facility in the region. HCA also has standalone ERs at 9275 Chamberlayne Road in Mechanicsville and 1700 Temple Parkway in Prince George. The third existing facility is at 14720 Hancock Village St. near Brandermill, and is due to be relocated about 9 miles west to 18201 Hull Street Road. The HCA spokesman said that project is still being planned, but didn’t share a timeline on the move.
Over in Hanover, HCA is pursuing local zoning approval needed for a proposed hospital campus near Ashland.
