Goochland County Administrator Victor Carpenter has resigned after a little over two years on the job.
Carpenter recently submitted his resignation letter to the Goochland County Board of Supervisors, according to a Friday morning release from the county’s director of community engagement Jessica Kronberg.
Carpenter’s last day in the position will be Feb. 20. It is not clear when he submitted the letter to the board.
“It is with a degree of sadness that I inform you of my desire to separate from Goochland County,” Carpenter said in the resignation letter. “I have determined that I should seek a new direction.”
“In 2022, God brought me here, and for that I am thankful. I will serve the remainder of my time giving everything I have, as the Board, this community, and the county deserve nothing less,” he added.
Board of Supervisors Chair Tom Winfree accepted Carpenter’s resignation.
“Vic has done his best on behalf of the County and residents and the Board appreciates his service,” Winfree said, according to the release from Kronberg.
Goochland County declined to comment to BizSense on Carpenter’s resignation. Carpenter did not respond to a request for comment by press time.
Carpenter is the second Goochland administrator to leave in the last four years. He took over the job in June of 2022, replacing Kenneth A. Young, who was in the role for less than a year.
Prior to his move to Goochland, Carpenter was the county administrator in Kershaw County, South Carolina, for 11 years.
Former Goochland Deputy County Administrator Krystal Onaitis also stepped down from her role after just over a year in November of 2023. Josh Gillespie is currently in that role.
The county announced Friday that the Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting to go into a closed meeting to discuss recruitment for an interim county administrator and a more permanent replacement on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Goochland County Administration Building.
The board will then reconvene in open session at the meeting.

Jackie – I wonder if someone or something is driving these people to leave so quickly.
Likely small locality politics. It’s the position stuck between those who would like Goochland to grow and those that would like Goochland to stay the same.
Goochland will need to be careful that they do not get a bad reputation, but perhaps they already have, which is why they need to hire from outside the area.
They did hire him from outside the area. He came from South Carolina…did you read the article?
Yes, I did. I should have said needed vs need. I was making that statement because they had. Thank you for the snide remark to point out my grammar error.
Disappointing to say the least.
