An addiction treatment company has planted its flag in Chesterfield, with plans to open more facilities locally in the future.

Freedom Recovery Centers is planning to open a 60-bed residential rehab center at 300 Gateway Centre Parkway later this month. The center will offer individual and group therapy, withdrawal management and medication-assisted treatments for drug and alcohol addictions.

CEO Greg Eger said the North Chesterfield facility, which is the year-old company’s first location, will help address what it sees as a shortage of intensive residential addiction treatment services in the area.

“From our analysis, there are a lot of treatment options in the outpatient setting,” Eger said in an interview. “There are some folks that offer residential services, but we have found that not many around here have (higher levels of care).”

Freedom Recovery says it will offer a level 3.5, high-intensity residential care program as defined by the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s criteria. At that stage of the 4-level system, patients have major social or psychological issues and need 24-hour care in a residential setting.

Freedom Recovery offers 12-step group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, grief counseling, anger management, dialectical behavior therapy, trauma-informed care and other types of therapy, per its website.

Eger declined to comment on treatment costs. The center says it accepts most insurance and Medicaid.

The center will open with 30 to 35 employees and would expand its team over time as it onboards residents.

Freedom Recovery is opening in a 30,000-square-foot, one-story building that was previously occupied by ITT Technical Institute, a now-defunct private, for-profit technical school which shuttered all its locations in 2016. The building has been renovated to accommodate a rehab center, with a new floor plan that features common areas, bedrooms and a commercial kitchen.

Freedom Recovery Centers has taken over a former ITT Technical Institute location, where it plans to offer treatment for drug and alcohol addiction.

Eger said Freedom Recovery will be operating on the property in a lease-to-own arrangement with Tennessee-based addiction treatment company Landmark Recovery. Landmark bought the property in 2021 and handled most renovations, seemingly with plans to open a facility of its own there that ultimately didn’t materialize. Eger said Freedom Recovery is a separate company from Landmark.

The Chesterfield location is expected to be the first of multiple facilities for Freedom Recovery. Eger said the company is interested in opening at least one more residential facility in the Richmond area, and also is seeking to establish a presence in Williamsburg and other places in Virginia.

The company didn’t share the investment cost made to open the upcoming Chesterfield location. A company spokesman declined to identify the ownership group behind Transformative Wellness Va LLC, which does business under the name Freedom Recovery, other than to say they aren’t based in Virginia.

An open house for the Chesterfield center is scheduled to take place 6-8 p.m. Feb. 19, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to follow the next day. The center is slated to open Feb. 24.
