A tenant that once bookended The Creeks at Virginia Centre plans to return.
Barnes & Noble is expected to reopen in the Glen Allen shopping center in August at 9840 Brook Road, according to Janine Flanigan, the company’s vice president of store planning and design.
The 9,500-square-foot space, which is on the southern end of the property and was formerly home to Pier 1 Imports, is adjacent to the storefront that Barnes & Noble vacated last year.
The upcoming store would be smaller than the next-door, 23,000-square-foot space where Barnes & Noble operated for more than 20 years until it closed in June. The new store also wouldn’t have an on-site café.
The new Glen Allen location would bring the New York-based Barnes & Noble back to four stores in the Richmond region. The company currently has stores at 11640 W. Broad St. in Short Pump, 5501 W. Broad St. in the Libbie Place shopping center and at Chesterfield Towne Center, per its website. Barnes & Noble College, a separate company from the bookstore chain, operates two locations on VCU’s campus.

Last spring, the Glen Allen store announced in a social media post it was closing in its now-former location because “the landlord has chosen to redevelop.” It wasn’t clear this week what that project entailed, or how it was expected to affect the store’s operations.
If Barnes & Noble intended to reopen in a different storefront at the same center, as it is now on track to do so, it didn’t share those plans publicly at the time. Flanigan didn’t provide further details about what factors were behind the relocation.
As Barnes & Noble plots a comeback at The Creeks, another major retail chain is preparing to open in the bookstore’s previous location.
Discount retail chain TJ Maxx has a new location in the works at 9850 Brook Road, where buildout appeared to be underway on the space Tuesday. It was unclear when TJ Maxx plans to open. A company spokeswoman declined to comment.
TJ Maxx has five locations in the region listed on its website.
Other retailers at The Creeks include Dick’s Sporting Goods, Michaels and Ross among others.
In other local retail news, fabric and crafts seller Joann is closing all its stores, a move that will cause two storefronts to go dark in the Richmond area.

Reading this article made my day! We were so sad when the Barnes and Noble closed. Now not only will the Barnes and Noble be back, but we are also getting a TJ Maxx. Hooray! I wish we could also get a Yankee Candle store.
It’s exciting to know they are coming back but they’re not bringing the cafe back. A lot of readers and consumers would grab a coffee or snack or what have you and grab a read and relax space. I am excited about the TJ Max though!!
