A national gym chain is adding a fourth location in the region and continues to scout for at least two additional spots.

Orangetheory Fitness announced last week it had secured a space at 7308 Hancock Village Drive in the Dick’s-anchored Hancock Village shopping center off Hull Street Road in Chesterfield.

Orangetheory is a franchised brand of fitness studios that offer one-hour full-body group workout classes, in which participants use heart rate monitors to measure their results. The idea is to keep one’s pulse in the so-called “orange zone,” between 84 and 91 percent of one’s maximum heart rate.

The upcoming Chesterfield location, which spans around 2,000 square feet, is slated to open in June.

Brooks Stone, COO of Orangetheory Fitness Richmond, the franchise group that controls the brand’s Richmond territory and elsewhere in Virginia, said it’ll cost around $700,000 to build out and equip the new Chesterfield space.

Stone said the Hancock Village location was attractive for multiple reasons.

“We chose this space in particular for parking access, the size, and its proximity to the development along the Hull Street corridor,” Stone said.

It’ll be the fourth Orangetheory location in the Richmond area and the 18th overall for Stone’s group, which also includes partners Mark Blum and Kyle Turner.

“We’re up and down I-81 from Winchester to Roanoke and across the state from Roanoke to Virginia Beach,” Stone said of the group’s other locations.

Orangetheory first landed in Richmond in 2015, opening in Short Pump at the corner of Lauderdale Drive and West Broad Street. That was soon followed by a location at 15801 City View Drive in Midlothian.

Stone said the Orangetheory Fitness Richmond team has renewed its 10-year franchise agreement for the current Richmond-based Orangetheory studios, and plans to open at least two more area locations following the Hancock Village location in the next five years.

The franchisees are currently pursuing Scott’s Addition for its fifth location, and are looking at potentially slotting in somewhere in the Atlee section of Hanover for the sixth, Stone said, though the sixth location could also be farther outside the Richmond area.

The Chesterfield location should have around 10 to 15 employees when it opens.

There is one other retail space currently available in Hancock Village, according to Raleigh-based River Crest Realty, which manages the shopping center. Developed in 2009, Hancock Village includes shops like Hobby Lobby, Five Below, Mattress Warehouse and Starbucks.

Orangetheory is headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida. Founded in 2010, it has since grown to over 1,300 locations across the U.S.

Looking forward to the Scott’s Addition location, the other three locations are not that close to metro RVA.
