Public design sessions for Virginia Center Commons area start this week

Henrico County will hold a charrette March 2-6 for residents to share ideas for the future of Virginia Center Commons and the nearby area. The daily sessions will be held at the mall’s food court entrance at 10101 Brook Road.

The intensive planning session encourages public participation and facilitates collaboration between residents, designers and planners on a vision for development. Participants can share ideas and will have an opportunity to provide immediate feedback to staff.

The charrette kicks off Monday with a hands-on design session from 6-9 p.m., followed by an open design studio Tuesday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. A work-in-progress presentation will close out the series Friday at 6 p.m. More information is available here.

Goochland boards meet this week

Goochland supervisors meet Wednesday at 2 p.m. Business includes public hearings on two requests from JSC Family LLC and Medical Development Ventures LLC to amend proffered conditions from a rezoning case for an 8-acre property west of Patterson Avenue and Creekmore Road. Full agenda here.

Goochland’s planning commission meets Thursday at 7 p.m. Grace Chinese Baptist Church of Richmond looks to amend conditions on a conditional-use permit to allow additional building square footage at 850 Broad Street Road and remove a payment requirement for a traffic signal at the road’s intersection with Manakin Road.

Also on the commission agenda, Orapax Hunting Preserve LLC seeks a permit allowing a public assembly space and unhosted short-term rentals on 672 acres at 3831, 3833 and 3835 River Road West. Full agenda here.

The Richmond Planning Commission meets Monday at 1:30 p.m. Business includes special-use permit requests for two single-family detached homes at 1320 N. 31st St. and at 5616 Kendall Road, and for a two-family attached dwelling at 1111 N. 32nd St. Full agenda here.

City Council approves 12-story tower, Hardywood-area project

Richmond City Council last week approved The Opus Group’s request to permit a 12-story, 168-unit residential tower at the northwest corner of Broad and Lombardy streets. It also approved Spy Rock Real Estate Group and Crescent Preservation & Development Co.’s mixed-use project that would involve Hardywood consolidating its flagship brewery.

Henrico adopts short-term home rental regs

Henrico supervisors last week approved ordinances regulating short-term residential rentals in the county. The rules, which take effect July 1, will create a registry for short-term rental properties and impose a transient occupancy tax on them. Registrants would be charged a $200 annual fee, and the tax would be 8 percent of the rental charge.

Chesterfield names new citizen information and resources director

Chesterfield County hired Emily Ashley as citizen information and resources director. She served eight years as the county’s emergency management coordinator before taking a similar role with Henrico County in May 2019.

The Missouri State grad with a master’s degree in public administration from ODU will rejoin Chesterfield in her new role on March 9.
