An accountant and a caterer are behind a new restaurant taking shape in the Fan.
Michael Harvey and Kai Starkes are planning to open Mike’s Jazz Cafe in early November at 2526 Floyd Ave., which was formerly occupied by Spoonbread Bistro.
In addition to a bar and jazz performances, the new spot will serve soul food and seafood options, with entrees expected to cost $15 to $22 a plate, Harvey said in an interview last week.
“It’s going to be an upscale jazz lounge,” he said of the concept.
The restaurant is expected to be able to seat around 80 people at a time in the 2,500-square-foot space. The first floor will be given over to a dining room while the second floor will be home to the jazz lounge and bar.
The restaurant expects to be open 4-10 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
Harvey, a jazz enthusiast, said the plan is to introduce live jazz music at some point once the restaurant is up and running.
Harvey and Starkes, who are a couple and business partners, also lease 105 Robinson St., which came as a package-deal with the Floyd storefront. The plan is to open a bakery in the Robinson Street space next year, Starkes said.
The couple share a love of cooking, and that combined with Starkes’ professional background motivated them to try out a restaurant together.
Harvey is a CPA and runs accounting firm MLH Assets Management. He plans to continue that work once the restaurant opens. Starkes owns catering company Flavor of Life, and she intends to continue to operate the company after Mike’s is operational.
The Mike’s space was formerly occupied by Spoonbread, which closed there in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and never reopened.

Best of luck…..this spot seems to have had more losses than wins.
That spot seems to be one of those graveyards, hoping it can get turned around
Wishing them luck—sounds cool!
