A Chesterfield-based gym in expansion mode has relocated to a larger space in the county and is building out its team of personal trainers.

ROI Strength & Conditioning recently opened in a 3,300-square-foot space at 1105 Alverser Drive near Chesterfield Towne Center.

The new location is more than twice the size of the gym’s former space. ROI co-owner Jordan Smuts said the gym moved to better handle demand for its programming.

“(The new space) will allow us to add more staff and be able to facilitate more sessions at the same time, and then to really have a career path for our employees and our trainers that we see doesn’t really often happen in the fitness space too much,” said Smuts, who owns the business with wife Stephanie Sfara.

ROI is geared toward older adults who either struggle to find time to exercise or have physical therapy needs. The gym offers one-on-one and semi-private sessions. The one-on-ones cost $55 per half-hour session, while the group sessions are priced at $45 per half-hour session, per ROI’s website. The gym also offers remote coaching for a monthly fee starting at $175.

“We are looking to cater toward the busy professional, working adult. People who may have some orthopedic injuries or things to work on or work around to where they need that extra time and attention,” Sfara said.

The gym is outfitted with kettlebells, dumbbells, squat racks, rowers and stationary bikes and similar equipment. ROI spent $150,000 on the new space’s buildout and new equipment.

The gym currently has two trainers and is working to build a larger team with the new location. Smuts said the goal was to have a total of five or six trainers, not counting the owners who are trainers themselves.

ROI started out during the COVID-19 pandemic in the garage of a home the couple was renting. The gym moved to the F suite of 11307 Polo Place in Chesterfield in October 2021 and operated there for about three years until it relocated to the current location on Alverser in late September. A grand opening event for the new space is planned for early November.

Smuts has been a full-time personal trainer since 2014. He worked at the Midlothian location of ACAC for seven years prior to opening ROI, which stands for “return on investment.”

Sfara has been a physical therapist since 2018 and strength coach since 2017. She started her career at Lakeside-based Adams Performance, where she mostly worked with high school and college athletes.
