Local nonprofits recently got a boost thanks to big gifts from a foundation in Hopewell.
The John Randolph Foundation awarded $300,000 last week to 15 area nonprofits that focus on health care, education, and quality of life.
The foundation awards grants twice a year as part of its mission to help residents and organizations in Hopewell and the surrounding area that focus on health, wellness and education.
The bulk of the grants — about 43 percent, or $128,250 — went to nonprofits that focus on health care.
Central Virginia Health Services received $93,500, the largest individual grant in the category, which the nonprofit will use to add a full-time physician and offer additional health-care services.
Richmond-based organizations such as the American Heart Association and Cross Over Ministry were also awarded grants.
Nine organizations that focus on quality of life services were awarded a total of $126,750 that will go toward food, shelter, counseling and recreation-centered services.
Crater Community Hospice was given $25,000 to support hospice care.
Hopewell Recreation & Parks was awarded two grants totaling $20,750 to support its activities for senior citizens and to fund its youth sports league. Big Brothers Big Sisters, CARES and Colonial Heights Food Pantry were also among the grantees.
Nonprofits that focus on education made up the remaining 15 percent of the grants, with $45,000 divided among John Tyler Community College, St. John Child Development Center and the Science Museum of Virginia Foundation.
John Tyler will continue to fund a part-time coach position at Hopewell High School, St. John Child Development will hire a program director and the Science Museum will use the grant to fund an after-school STEM pilot program for middle school children.
