Highwoods’s starting lineup

renderingbaseballbottom_thumbIf Highwoods Properties’ proposal to redevelop the Boulevard and Shockoe goes forward, a handful of local firms stand to get their slice of the $785 million construction and hourly billing/fee-for-service pie.

The players who stand to gain the most (according to an organizational chart from the City of Richmond):

Ballpark Design
HKS Inc. Based in Dallas, this high-profile firm is behind the Indianapolis Colts’ new $720 million retractable-roofed Lucas Oil Stadium, ongoing renovations at Dodger Stadium and U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. They are also behind the Dallas Cowboys’ new venue, which will be the largest NFL stadium with the world’s longest single span roof and largest center-hung video board. The HKS Richmond office has completed more than 800 projects totaling more than $5 billion in construction throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, according to a news release. Riverfront Plaza and VCU’s Critical Care Hospital are among the firm’s local projects.

Master planning for Shockoe Center
CMSS Architects is the master planner for the Village of Rockett’s Landing’s mixed-use development in the near East End. They also designed the 23-story Armada Hoffler tower in Virginia Beach, Media General’s corporate headquarters on East Franklin Street and the Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater.

Traffic, parking, infrastructure and storm water
Timmons Group, a civil engineering firm with headquarters in Richmond, developed the site for the Rolls-Royce Plant in Prince George County. The company employs 350 people and operates several offices in Virginia and North Carolina. Most recently, Timmons was awarded a contract to provide services for the development for the new combined headquarters for the U.S. Army Forces Command and the U.S. Army Reserve Command at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Train shed renovation, museum and slave trail
Richmond-based SMBW Architects are behind the VMFA expansion (along with London-based American architect Rick Mather). SMBW also worked to give City Hall’s crumbling exterior a face-lift a few years ago.

Communications
Richmond-based marketing and advertising company Boisseau Partners has recently done work for Bow-Tie Partners, Rocketts Landing, Massey Energy, LandAmerica and the Richmond Folk Festival. Their specialty is marketing to baby boomers, and they operate the Boomer Project, a research resource for marketers.

Investment banking
Morgan Keegan, a Memphis-based investment firm, is a subsidiary of Regions Financial Corp. The company has been in hot water recently, as number of class-action lawsuits have been claimed the firm misrepresented the risk assessment for six types of bonds that cost investors $2 billion in losses in 2007. A paper released by the Securities Litigation and Consulting Group analyzes the losses and says the firm failed to inform investors of the risk.
Other key players:

Zoning and legal
Hirschler Fleischer, LeClairRyan and Williams Mullen

Residential
Bobb Group and Historic Housing
