Sports bar gets ejected from the game

mulligansA Fan sports bar has been evicted from its building on West Main Street.

Landlord Eck Enterprises on Tuesday changed all the locks at Mulligan’s Sports Bar and Grille.

A sign on the door said: “This property has been repossessed by Eck Enterprises.”

Bruce Boykin, a principal at Eck, said he couldn’t comment on the eviction.

The letter posted on Mulligan’s door.

The 16-year-old business sold was sold last year from its original owner to current owner Edward Dudley. Mulligan’s opened in Innsbrook in 1990 and spun off several locations, including the one in the Fan.

There is still one Mulligan’s on Hull Street in Chesterfield.

The Fan location was trying to change its image, according to its Facebook page, which announced that “A brand new Mulligan’s” was on the way and would be called Mulligan’s Uptown Bar and Grill. The banner advertised a new menu, more music and new specials.

First Baja and now Mulligans. What are landlords trying to tell sports bar operators?

I would guess they’re trying to tell them to pay their rent.

I agree with Chris… I think it’s just Richmond’s way of finally pushing out the rif raf. Both of those locations could be fixed up and leased out at a much higher cost, to much better clientele and hopefully help build up that area of town. (Not that it’s dirty, but it could certainly be nicer.)

I think they are trying to tell them to either pay the rent and/or run a first class operation or get out. I don’t see Home Team or Gus having a problem. They are clean, upgraded and well run establishments that serve delicious food. The others mentioned are run down, filthy establishments that have little to offer.

Was there on Sunday, place was packed. Sad to see it go, it was a great bar. One of the last places not overrun with yuppies or U of R dbags or NoVa kids. The Disneyfication of the scene here is a shame. A town needs a couple of good dive bars.

No doubt we do, but there is still Commercial Taphouse, Sidewalk Cafe, Joes Inn, and Chiocca’s, to name a few, which are all way cooler anyway, except for having as many TV’s of course. I hardly think that newcomers like Bellytimber, Gus’s, Don’t Look Back or Home Team Grill are a Disneyfication, but that’s just my opinion.

This is Richmond, people here resist change on instinct and pure stubbornness alone. Trying to change Mulligan’s “image” would never have worked, especially with the “Mulligan’s” in the name.

Fact is Richmonder’s don’t support anything..just criticize. May these operators could do better id there was more backing instead of complaining. Give it just a few more month or years and these all stars like “home team grill’, who haven’t existed long enough to feel the wrath of Richmond, will certainly meet the same demise!
