A local furniture maker is bulking up as the City of Richmond looks to open more land near the Diamond to private development.

The Richmond School Board plans to sell its 66,000-square-foot warehouse at 1722 Arlington St. to McKinnon and Harris for $1.42 million. The building has been owned by the school board for at least three decades, according to city records, but school board spokeswoman Cletisha Lovelace said it has drawn interest in recent years.

“The Arlington Road property has been a highly sought-after property,” she said. “Our staff received a number of inquiries from developers.”

The school board uses the property for warehouse storage and driver’s education, although Lovelace said those operations will be relocated to a property at 1501 Commerce Road by spring.

The city approved the school system’s acquisition of 1501 Commerce Road in December, along with a second property at 1801 Commerce Road.

Those properties have also been used to relocate school system and city operations from 2907 North Boulevard. The city has said it hopes to open that 60-acre tract for redevelopment.

McKinnon and Harris is in a 36,000-square-foot Summit Avenue warehouse in Scott’s Addition. Company president Will Massie said the company will continue to operate out of that location but would not disclose his plans for the Arlington Street building.

Furniture production would be an acceptable use for the property, which is currently zoned for heavy industrial uses.

The school board voted in June to declare the Arlington Road property surplus and put it on the market. The sale to McKinnon and Harris was approved Monday by the city’s planning commission for the purpose of “stimulating private investment, job creation and economic development” in the area. The sale will be considered by the city council at its Sept. 23 meeting.

The four-acre parcel and two-story warehouse have been assessed at $1.13 million.
