With a new office downtown, a Williamsburg firm hopes its name will catch on in Richmond.
Smellycat Productions expanded to Richmond in August with a small ninth-floor office at 530 E. Main St.
The company, which is leasing 300 square feet, does video production, website design, search engine optimization and graphic design for businesses of all sizes.
Smellycat was founded in Williamsburg seven years ago and looked to Richmond to tap into the larger swath of businesses and government agencies in the area.
“We had clients in Richmond,” said Smellycat owner Cindy Cloughly. “Having an office here makes it so we can meet with clients and gives them the ability to sit down with us when we’re editing.”
Smellycat’s local clients have included the Richmond-based Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Historic Petersburg Foundation and Bedcrafters by Michelle.
Prices for Smellycat’s services vary. Bill Cloughly, a Smellycat consultant and husband of Cindy Cloughly, said the average website can cost as little as $3,000 and as much as $12,000. A website the firm is designing for Vines of Virginia costs about $8,000, he said.
The company does not have any full-time employees but has 15 contractors and freelancers, Bill Cloughly said. Two of those are video editors based in Midlothian. The firm is looking for two more video editors in the area and expects to need more in the future.
As for the Smellycat name, Bill Cloughly said the company wanted something that would pique web surfers’ interest.
“They would go into that website just out of curiosity,” he said. “And it’s a name we can play with. Interns start out as kittens and can work their way up to becoming smelly cats.”
