After a last-minute name change, a new restaurant on Broad Street is open for business.

Level Restaurant & Bar, which until recently was to be called Next Restaurant & Bar, held a soft opening Nov. 4 at its 2007 W. Broad St. space, with a grand opening planned for Saturday.

“Everyone kept asking about the name ‘Next,’ saying ‘Next? Next what?’” said Sandy Wang, who manages the Japanese restaurant. “We want it to be the next Level.”

Wang said it has taken six months and $80,000 to complete construction on the former insurance office. More than $158,000 in building permits has been issued for the property since June, according to city records.

The 3,000-square-foot space includes a dining room, a bar that lights up when touched, a sushi bar and indoor upper level seating. Wang said Level has about 14 employees to help run the restaurant, which is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.

In addition to the dozens of restaurants nearby in the Fan, the restaurant faces its share of competition within a block or two on Broad in the form of Emilio’s, the Savory Grain and the forthcoming Pig & Pearl.

“We’re doing something totally different,” Wang said. “A lot of the restaurants around are doing very American food. We have unique food, and we’re doing our own thing.”

The restaurant has been airing advertisements on local radio station 103.7 Play for the past three months to get the word out.

Wang said she expects the final piece of the restaurant, its ABC license, to arrive Wednesday.
