A Jackson Ward eatery has added some alfresco dining to the neighborhood’s sidewalks.

Saison last month completed the installation of a patio outside its market at 23 W. Marshall St. The project cost about $1,000 and adds about a dozen seats.

“It’s been an immediate success,” said Jay Bayer, a Saison co-owner. “People come and hang out and have a beer or a glass of wine or a cocktail.”

Bayer said Saison started on the project last year but put it on hold for the fall and winter before starting back up in March. Bayer said Saison had to get approval from three different city agencies, as well as from Virginia ABC.

“We’re trying to improve the feel of the neighborhood and give it some more vibrancy,” Bayer said.

Plans are also in the works for a frozen drink maker to serve “awesome drinks in slushy format,” he said.

Saison isn’t the only Jackson Ward establishment looking to offer its patrons some fresh air. The Rogue Gentleman at 618 N. First St. reopened its 20-person patio this month. It eventually plans to install a garden nearby to grow herbs, flowers and vegetables for use in the kitchen and at the bar.
