For its first leap out of Richmond, a 3-year-old local law firm has expanded into Hampton Roads.
Golightly Mulligan & Booth last month opened a new office in Chesapeake in a move spurred by the addition of attorney Mary Morgan, who came over from Cooper, Spong & Davis in Portsmouth.
Founding partner Michele Mulligan said the expansion also made geographic sense.
“Our firm is essentially statewide, and it made sense to have another base of operations,” Mulligan said. “My partner, Scott (Golightly), grew up in Newport News, and I spent some time after law school in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, so we have connections to the area.”
The firm now has four attorneys, all of whom attended law school at the University of Richmond. Mulligan and Jerry Booth are both Richmond natives, Golightly is from Hampton Roads and Morgan is from Spokane, Washington.
Morgan and Mulligan also have known each other for several years as they practice in similar areas of law.
Golightly Mulligan & Booth handles cases in trusts and estates, small business law, real estate litigation, commercial transactions, professional liability defense, defense of bar complaints and a wide range of civil litigation.
The firm, which has a 2,000-square-foot office at 2016 John Rolfe Parkway in the West End, has been considering the move into Hampton Roads for some time and only recently began serious discussions about it, Mulligan said.
“Hampton Roads is actually a bigger legal market, with a lot of opportunity,” she said. “It has a larger population than Richmond, but as a whole they have very similar attitudes to Richmond in that they’re collegial and good to work with – and against.”
For now, Morgan is the sole attorney working out of the firm’s 600-square-foot Chesapeake office at 924 Professional Place.
Mulligan said the firm is cautiously considering expanding further by hiring new attorneys, either in Richmond or Hampton Roads.
While GMB expands out of Richmond, several small firms have been moving into the market lately, including Kaleo Legal, which moved to the city from Hampton Roads, and IslerDare from Northern Virginia.
