Short Pump’s newest liquor store was unveiled this week – and it came with a splash of Richmond-themed design work.
The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control held a grand opening on Wednesday for its latest “premier store” at 3450 Pump Road in the Short Pump Crossing shopping center.
Jennifer Guild, an ABC spokeswoman, said premier stores have a different look than typical ABC stores.
“They are not the traditional ABC model,” Guild said. “(Premier stores) have distinct characteristics based on the areas in which they are located.”
The store opened for business last month.
The 6,000-square-foot Short Pump store pays homage to Richmond’s history as the capital city. Design features include white columns in the style of the Virginia State Capitol colonnade, exposed brick, antique jugs, and a sepia photograph of Richmond’s skyline. Locally based KSA Interiors worked on the design for the store.
The ABC has opened three other premier stores since March 2014 in Williamsburg, Leesburg and Virginia Beach. The Williamsburg location has a replica still flanked by moonshine. The Leesburg location has a hunting theme, and the Virginia Beach store has a coastal theme.
Guild said the premier stores typically do well from a revenue perspective.
“Customers have responded really well to these stores,” she said. “Sales at the three premier stores that we have opened have been trending positively and been better than the year prior.”
Virginia ABC has operated a store at Short Pump Crossing since 1996. Its previous storefront in the shopping center closed Nov. 14. It re-opened in the new space Nov. 18.
There are 42 Virginia ABC stores spread across Richmond city, Henrico, Hanover, and Chesterfield. The Short Pump store is among it top grossing stores in the region, behind the one along North Thompson Street in Carytown. ABC has 353 stores open in Virginia.
Virginia Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian Moran, Virginia ABC Chairman Jeffrey Painter, and other guests were on hand to toast the Short Pump store’s opening on Wednesday.
