The cannonballs were rolling at this year’s Richmond Show, the annual awards ceremony of the Advertising Club of Richmond.
Held Friday evening at The Renaissance downtown, the event presented the club’s coveted cannonball awards to local agencies and studios for standout work in advertising, design, interactive and production. A panel of judges chose from submissions entered in those categories, as well as a student competition.
The night’s big winners included branding firm Work Labs and motion graphics firm Cream Studio, which won best-in-show awards in the design and production categories, respectively. Work Labs was recognized for its “Bling” posters for motorcycle accessories company Cobra USA, while Cream’s award was for its show-open video for last year’s Richmond Forum.
The Martin Agency picked up two best-in-show awards: in the advertising category for its “Be Better at Credit” campaign for credit company Experian, and in the interactive category for its “Delete to Feed” campaign for Land O’Lakes and Feeding America.
The VCU Brandcenter won the top honor in the student competition for a submission titled “Tetra Integrated.”
The Mike Hughes Ad Person of the Year award was presented to Scott Sherman, associate professor and advertising sequence coordinator at VCU’s Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture.
Sherman, who was nominated by Brandcenter professor Kelly O’Keefe, has more than two decades of experience in advertising and academia, including stints in the creative departments of local agencies RightMinds and Landmark Advertising, the in-house advertising arm of Markel Corp.
“I haven’t worked in the ad business for 15 years, but I work in it through my students,” Sherman said before the ceremony. “To be recognized is very touching and powerful. I’m a behind-the-scenes kind of guy, and to be recognized for a behind-the-scenes role is really neat.”
Molly Covert was introduced as the club’s new president, replacing Rachel Gregory, who concluded her one-year term. Covert previously served as the board’s creative chair. Board copywriter James Moffitt was named vice president.
The Wes Anderson-themed event, titled “ADventure at the Grand Renaissance Hotel,” drew more than 300 attendees to the downtown events venue. Attendees were encouraged to wear costumes based on characters from the writer-director’s films. Melissa Chase and Jack Lauterback of 103.7 Play emceed the ceremony.
