College essentials: Laptop. Mini fridge. Segway?
Buck Ward is hoping that last one is the new big vehicle on campus. Ward, who owns Segway of Richmond in Shockoe Bottom, just started an advertising campaign aimed at college students.
He attended the back-to-school night on Friday at VCU and has a blurb in the university’s magazine.
“Given the fact that over the summer we’ve had students in here looking for alternative forms of transportation, my hope is that it [demand] will be pretty strong.”
Since opening in May, Ward has sold 20 Segways. He’s doubled his initial order of the two-wheeled vehicles.
“We’re still experimenting with advertising concepts,” Ward said. “We’re throwing it up on the wall and seeing what sticks and hoping through it all we’re smarter next year after having a little experience under our belt.”
Aaron Kremer is the BizSense Editor. He does not have a Segway. Then again, he didn’t have a mini-fridge in college. Please send story tips to [email protected].
