Attention Cavalier Telephone business customers: there may be a new “$5 energy recovery” fee on your monthly bill phone bill which you could avoid paying.
Sean McGlynn, owner and president of SanAir, noticed the new charge on his monthly invoice and called Cavalier (note the irony). He also filed a complaint with the State Corporation Commission. When he reached someone at Cavalier, the company said it would take the “energy recovery fee” off his bill if he withdrew his complaint against the company.
He no longer pays the energy recovery fee.
The SCC has received about a dozen complaints, according to William Irby, the division director of communications.
Irby said the fee is perfectly legal. “It’s an inter-state charge, which means we don’t have any jurisdiction over it.”
Irby said that because of deregulation, phone companies no longer have to file documents with the government that list their rates and fees.
“If there is no rule at the FCC that says they cannot do it, then they can do it,” Irby said.
Cavalier did not return BizSense calls.
Special thanks to BizSense reader Sean McGlynn for the alert.
