If you haven’t heard of the Pickens Plan by now, you must be living off the grid.
The radio and television spots have been running since summer urging you to join billionaire T. Boone Pickens in his effort to get the U.S. to quit its $700 billion oil addiction.
Last week BizSense ran an article about the availability of natural gas vehicles in the Richmond area, which might be primed for some fast growth depending on the availablility of fueling stations. The always entertaining and super wealthy T.Boone Pickens has a plan to solve that problem, and make a boatload in the process.
CBS’ 60 Minutes ran this profile piece on Pickens that also highlights some interesting parts of his plan to promote alternative energy.
One key component is to convert the country’s commercial trucking fleet, which burn 25% of U.S. oil imports, to run on domestically produced natural gas.
While Pickens is promoting alternative fuels for our national best interests, the business man has a lot to gain if his plan comes to fruition. Pickens runs a natural gas hedge fund, a chain of natural gas fueling stations, and plans to invest $10 billion to build the world’s biggest wind farm.
Interviewer Charlie Rose follows Pickens around the country as he promotes his plan. Rose doesn’t hesitate to ask him tough questions about his political activities, his chances of success, and his motivations.
Pickens clearly has financial motivations, but he is taking substantial risk to help develop American energy independence. Without private investment, any effort to reduce our carbon-dependency is guaranteed to fall short. The 60 Minutes segment presents a Pickens who has ordained himself the founding father of a viable alternative energy business model.
Whether or not it works, is an entirely different story.
