Update from the Virginia Association of Insurance Agents (VAIA)

The insurance industry is aging rapidly. According to IIABA, 60% of insurance professionals are over the age of 45.   That is why, five years ago, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) educational foundation known as Virginia Association of Insurance Agents (VAIA) was formed by Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia (IIAV).

This foundation was formed to provide educational resources and career opportunities within the insurance industry to the communities of Virginia.  In 2006, the Insurance Career Institute was created with only one program, a four-week new hire training course.  Since then, VAIA and the Insurance Career Institute have grown significantly to what it is today.

The Insurance Career Institute now has five programs; week-long & weekend pre-licensing courses in Property & Casualty and Life & Health, commercial lines week, personal lines week, and a brand new six-week new hiring training program taking place July 13 – August 19, 2009.  The six-week new hire training program is a brand new concept in workforce development in the insurance industry.  Students will spend three days in the classroom and two days at an actual worksite where they will be able to gain real world experience. This training program is quite unique because there is no other training program of this type that VAIA is aware of in Virginia or the United States.

To help individuals who are looking to enter the insurance industry, VAIA has created a Career Opportunity Board.  Here, agencies and companies can post their new hire positions and internships.  It is another way for the insurance industry to connect with Virginia communities.  VAIA has attended numerous career fairs and informational sessions to show the next generation the fascinating career possibilities available within the insurance industry.  Scholarships are also available to help individuals who may not have the monetary means to obtain the training needed to start a career in the industry.

Not only is VAIA providing insurance training resources to potential new hires, it is also educating Virginia high school students in financial/insurance literacy.  The only way to fix the mistakes that have caused the current economic downturn is to educate our youth and young adults on how to make financially wise decisions.  IIAV members are stepping up to the plate as volunteer guest speakers to talk to local students about insurance basics and career opportunities.

INVEST is a program created by IIABA to bring insurance basics into high schools across America.  The material is taught in either a year long or half year format.  Students not only learn about insurance, but also gain basic business fundamentals.  There are currently three high schools in Virginia participating in this program: Deep Run High School, Gloucester High School, and James River High School.  Both Gloucester and James River started their programs this year.  VAIA is very excited to be working with these schools and is hoping to expand its reach in the coming years.

The past few months have been filled with brainstorming and planning for upcoming events.  A pre-licensing course started in January and the commercial lines and personal lines weeks began in March.  It has been a very exciting time for VAIA as it tries to broaden the number of students it reaches.  There are many goals set forth for 2009 and VAIA is looking forward to a successful year of educating, training and providing career opportunities to eager minds.
