David Urban, a marketing professor at the VCU School of Business, has been named the interim dean.
“This is both an awesome responsibility and a great opportunity,” Urban said when reached by phone today.
Urban, who is well liked by students, said that he will not make any changes immediately. He said he was thankful for the momentum provided by President Trani and Michael Sesnowitz, the outgoing business school dean. Sesnowitz will remain at VCU as an economics professor.
“The first thing that any good chief executive does is thoroughly assess the situation, and that’s what I’ll be doing in the coming weeks,” he said. “But what we need to do more of is telling the VCU story, and it’s a great story. We are a growing school both in terms of population and in reputation. Anything I can do to get that story across is part of my responsibility.”
Provost Stephen Gottfredson announced the selection this morning in an e-mail to faculty in which he said he was delighted to work with Urban and commended positive changes Urban had effected in the marketing department during his chairmanship.
