Flying Squirrels find their voice

Richmondjimmyers will find a familiar voice in the broadcast booth this summer, as local radio host Jimmy Barrett has been tapped as the voice of the Flying Squirrels.

Barrett will serve as the public address announcer for the 2010 season, as well as continue his morning show, “Richmond’s Morning News with Jimmy Barrett,” on WRVA 1140. This announcement marks a return to professional baseball for Barrett who served as the public address announcer for the Detroit Tigers from 1991-1999.

From the Flying Squirrels press release:

“When Jimmy originally expressed interest in the position, I was elated,” said Flying Squirrels’ Director of Broadcasting Jon Laaser.  “To have someone who is not only widely-popular in the area, but also has a Major League background and sound, is a great luxury for our franchise as we grow our identity.”

What we want to know is how Barrett will handle the night games and get up in time for the 5AM morning show? Maybe he just doesn’t sleep at all.

“Voice of the Team” is typically the moniker for the Radio Play by Play announcer, who sits in the broadcast booth. Public Address Announcer is a different position. He/she communicates with the fans in the stands over the PA system.

As I understand it, there were at least a few very qualified people who were being considered for this position, so congratulations Jimmy. I hope the Flying Squirrels and Jimmy have a very successful season. I’m looking forward to some AA prospects on the field in about a month.
