A Shockoe lunch spot known for its grilled panini has closed.
The Southern Railway Deli on 14th Street is closed. A sign on the door lists the number for the commercial real estate firm CBRE, which would suggest the restaurant fell behind on its rent. It’s possible that the restaurant did not sell enough lunch food to support an establishment of that size (and presumably, that rent).
BizSense could not immediately reach someone at CBRE.
This is the second Shockoe restaurant to close. In February, longtime brewery and nightspot Richbrau filed for a bankruptcy liquidation.

A real loss, one of the best lunch spots!
Ahh . . . this is sad! The Best spinach salad!
If by best you mean worst, then yes. I hate to see a shockoe business fail, but this place was truly awful. I hope a new spot can move in and be successful!
They just never were able to master their pizza receipe….couldn’t hold a candle to JoJo’s.
I could also never get behind the $9 salad. It was good but just too pricey.
…such a big space for a deli.
I went there once and paid $8 for a tiny salad and never went back. $5 I would have been there every day
You know…when I have gone through that way into Manchester I always comment that it always looked closed to me. Something I have been noticing for atleast the last year. I could never tell if they were actually closed for the day or if maybe no one was eating there…either way, its sad to see another business close but I can’t say I’m surprised.
It’s too bad they couldn’t make a go of it – the look, layout and menu reminded me of NYC’s midtown delis, but the food was no match. Mediocre at best, and at NY prices. Hope someone can make something happen in the space. Great location.
I appreciate locally run business, but in Southern Railway’s case, the family feel gave way to unprofessional service. In the five times I have eaten there, they have twice been unable to complete my order because they ran out of stock, have gotten the price wrong once, and several times left me stranded at the counter or register waiting for someone, even when I was one of the only customers in the store. It makes little difference to me now that the place is closed, as I was not planning on going there again.
I live in the Vistas and only discovered yesterday (5/13) that this place had closed. That’s probably because I almost never went there since they only seemed to be open for weekday lunch hours and I don’t work nearby. The neighborhood has plenty of lunch options already but could use a good small convenience store/grocery for nights and weekends. This place and the other place that was open briefly on Main in the Shockoe Commons property tried to be too high-end/fancy when it came to that role (who cares how many varieties of Greek cookies they sell?). On the other… Read more »
