BizSense readers who live near the University of Richmond, take note: Scam artists are canvassing the neighborhoods around the school pretending to be UR athletes raising money for books and international study.
UR reported Wednesday that its police department has taken complaints from residents reporting that the individuals are representing themselves as UR students. The UR police are also reporting that the scamsters may be saying they are students at other colleges, such at Virginia Tech.
One of the scamsters said he was on the men’s lacrosse team, according to the school.
UR doesn’t have varsity men’s lacrosse.

This is not confined to the UR neighborhoods. A college-age kid came to our door (in a small neighborhood in Northside) after dark last Friday soliciting money for his “VCU project.” No paperwork, no ID, no clipboard, none of the things solicitors carry. Told him “no thanks” but he would not leave my porch or my property, even after I shut the door. This is not limited to the immediate UR area, this happened to us this past weekend in the Fan. A young man came to our door saying he was “X”‘s son from the down the street, the lady with the golden retriever (which street doesn’t have a golden retriever) and was soliciting donations for a pre-law trip to the UK. He had practically no documentation supporting the trip and only accepted cash I asked him which law school he was targeting. He replied either Harvard or Princeton.
