Smurfit-Stone shutting local plants

smurfPackaging company Smurfit-Stone is shutting two local plants, according to notices filed with the state.

Chicago-based Smurfit-Stone informed the state that the move would affect 146 employees at its Sprouse Road plant in Henrico and 83 employees at its Lewis Road plant, also in Henrico. The two factories produced different types of cardboard boxes.

Smurfit-Stone told the state that it would terminate operations on or after Oct. 31, according to the filing with the Virginia Workforce Network.

The company’s media representatives did not return requests for comment.

The company emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy this summer. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to close six container plants by the end of the year, plus one other next year. Previously the company had said it planned to consolidate its two Henrico plants and reduce the number of employees working at them from 300 to 150.

The company employs more than 1,000 people in Virginia and has other major facilities in West Point, Hopewell and Martinsville.

The state needs to move more aggressively as we hear announcements of 10 new jobs at DuPont, and maybe more, later BUT I have yet to see any new real jobs to counter the LOSSES in the hundreds like this one today. Oh and drop the press releases that state all the new jobs Northrop Grumman created by relocating people to Virginia as very few people unemployed are really getting hired.

This report is lacking one thing. They are closing these plants, but relocating to another plant close by.

The underlying issue is primary manufacturing, or the lack of it.

And you don’t need American packaging unless you make products in America.
