Outdoors store has hill to climb

brmsshortpumpA Virginia-based outdoor gear retailer has updated its appearance and offerings following the recent addition of national competing chain REI to West Broad Village.

Blue Ridge Mountain Sports opened a new 8,000 square foot store at Towne Center West this past weekend.

Founded in 1972, Blue Ridge Mountain Sports’ 12 locations stretch from New Jersey to Virginia and Tennessee.

The company has had a smaller location farther east on Broad near Innsbrook for many years, which now serves as an outlet store.

The Towne Center West store carries a selection of slightly higher-end gear than many of the other stores, according to Innsbrook store manager Nick Orrell.

Next door, build out is nearly complete on a new Plaza Azteca restaurant. The Hampton Roads-based chain has 12 other locations and should open in early 2011.

“We are pleased to welcome Blue Ridge Mountain Sports and Plaza Azteca to Towne Center West,” Ramon W. Breeden, Jr., chairman of Towne Center West developer The Breeden Company said.

“This growth is a dynamic addition to the town center, offers vitality to Richmond and is a promising sign of economic recovery.”

The older store will become an outlet.
