The Center for Rural Culture will not operate a farmers market this year.
The group announced recently that they would cease operation of the Goochland Farmers Market in 2011 rather than compete with a new market launched by the CRC’s former executive director.
From the CRC news release:
Although the Vestry of Grace Episcopal Church has generously offered to renew the Market’s lease on the church property, the Board believes that the county cannot support two markets and that diluting the customer base is unfair to our vendors. Competition from other markets in the Richmond metro area and rising gas prices were factors in the decision.
CRC had operated a market for the past five years. It said it will continue to host classes and events.
Lisa Dearden, former executive director of the CRC, resigned this year after a feud with the group’s board of directors over access to the organization’s books. A later audit found there were no accounting improprieties. Since leaving, Dearden has launched a new entity and has organized her own farmers market, called My Goochland Market.
Dearden responsed to the CRC’s decision to cancel this year’s market in the Goochland Gazette:
“I’m not pleased that they are not having a market,” said Dearden Monday, adding that she had not originally intended to start a new farmers market. She said she plans to open May 7 and has already signed up 30 vendors for her market, called My Goochland Market, located at 68 Broad Street Road in Manakin-Sabot.
