The owners of a downtown seafood restaurant and night spot are taking their concept south of the James.
Co-owner and operator Michelle Williams confirmed yesterday that the Richmond Restaurant Group is planning to open a second Hard Shell in Chesterfield in the Shoppes at Bellgrade.
The group is taking over the restaurant space next to Ruth Chris Steakhouse, which was most recently Outer Banks Seafood Company. That restaurant operated for less than year. Before that, the location housed Bottega Bistro.
“We’ve been looking around for a second location for the Hard Shell for a longtime,” Williams said. “We feel like it is the right space for us at the right time.”
Williams said when she and the other members of the group heard Outer Banks was closing, they made an inquiry into leasing the space.
The group’s other restaurants include deLux, Water Grill, The Hill Cafe and Europa.
Williams said they plan to make major renovations to the interior of the space to make it match the Shockoe Slip restaurant. They will also be expanding the bar, she said. The restaurant serves seafood, steaks and other meals in a casual setting.
The new Hard Shell is slated to open in September, and it might not be the last expansion for the Richmond Restaurant Group.
“We wanted to open a second location in Richmond before thinking about taking the concept on the road,” Williams said.
