A new professional indoor lacrosse league plans to launch next season with a franchise in Richmond.
According to a report in Sports Business Journal, SportsQuest CEO Steve Burton will be the owner of the Richmond franchise, with the team playing at a facility to be built on the sports complex’s campus.
Phil Evans, who resigned as the president of SportsQuest in February, is commissioner for the North American Lacrosse League. Evans previously was president of a developmental NBA league.
The new lacrosse league will be based in Somerville, N.J., and its other teams are in Charlotte; Hershey, Pa.; Lexington, Ky.; Orlando; Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; and New York.
The league will likely play a 12-game schedule and compete with two other leagues, including the National Lacrosse League.
The franchise fee for teams is about $250,000, and players will earn up to $1,000 a week, according to the story.
