Two Richmond-based companies have opened their wallets in order to light up the downtown river front.
Dominion and MeadWestvaco have agreed to foot the fireworks bill for a newly announced event dubbed Fireworks on the James which will take place July 3 on Brown’s Island.
Dwight Jones announced the event this morning, joined by Dominion CEO Thomas Ferrell and MWV CEO John Luke, during a press conference.
Jones said the event is to bring more family friendly fun downtown and to draw out of town visitors. The city will continue to have a fireworks display at Dogwood Dell on the Fourth of July. Chief Operating Officer Byron Marshall said the new event is another option for celebrating the holiday.
MWV CEO John Luke said, “When MeadWestvaco chose to move our headquarters downtown on this riverfront, this is exactly the thing we had in mind.”

This seems silly to me. The Dogwood Dell celebration is well established. Why couldn’t they just put their support behind that? Richmond is replete with fireworks celebrations, thanks to the Flying Squirrels. Why do we need another one?
Because we have to give the nay-sayers something to whine about.
