A new chain of senior-focused medical clinics is opening five locations in Virginia, and they’re offering some services Grandma might not be familiar with.
JenCare Neighborhood Medical Centers has been planning its push into the state for about a year. The company is owned by the same family that runs Chen Medical, a 30-year-old practice in Miami.
“We looked at the country to see where there were pockets of underserved seniors,” said Jonathan Figueroa, director of marketing for the JenCare.
“We bring health care to the underserved and those communities that have less access to quality health care and quality senior care,” he said. “We saw Virginia as a great opportunity.”
JenCare is launching with two locations in the Richmond area, one of which will open this month in Henrico at 3808 Mechanicsville Turnpike, where the company has leased 7,144 square feet in the Glen Lea Shopping Center.
The company will open its second Richmond location in October in the former Harper’s Hardware store at 17th and Broad streets. The company bought the 11,857-square-foot retail building there in June for $1.39 million.
The company’s other locations will be in the Tidewater area. A clinic in Norfolk is already open, and the other two are slated for Portsmouth and Newport News. The company was represented by Divaris in its real estate negotiations.
JenCare has recruited six doctors and is in the process of hiring more to staff the various locations.
Figueroa said that, like its sister company Chen Medical, JenCare will incorporate some Eastern medicine – including acupuncture – into its practice.
“Western medicine has been around for a couple hundred years. Eastern medicine has been around for thousands of years,” Figueroa said. “Studies show that Oriental medicine, specifically acupuncture, can help with a number of ailments.”
While those techniques will be offered, they aren’t the driving component.
“We do all the traditional standard stuff but have that added component to elevate our level of service,” Figueroa said.
